BEHIND THE DESIGN LOOK TO THE FUTURE The Kobe A.D. marks the end of Kobe Bryant’s playing days—but that doesn’t mean his influence will fade to black. Designers studied the Black Mamba’s quick-strike mentality to craft the optimal combination of tech for ruthless attacks from any angle. The result: a fine-tuned, flexible foundation featuring Zoom Air unit for responsiveness and Lunarlon foam for a more natural sensation, a breathable, stable engineered textile with Flywire technology for lightweight lockdown. We sat down with Ross Klein, Lead Innovation Designer for Nike Basketball, to get the history behind the A.D.

REDEFINED TRACTION Quickness is built from the ground up—so Klein and the design team started at the sole. “We wanted to make sure we had maximum durability and maximum deflection with all the multi-directional cuts in a sport like basketball,” Klein says. “Small nodules are aligned with the siping and flexibility of the midsole—we call it ‘micro-detailed tuning.’ We look into the smallest elements and obsess about those details.”

ENGINEERED FOR IMPACT The Kobe A.D. is light on its feet—but stopping on a dime requires more than traction. This is a system of quick that assists in Kobe's attack mentality. You need cushioning that responds to your next move. Klein responded with micro-tuned Lunarlon foam, a staple throughout Kobe’s signature line. “It's a lightweight foam, giving you the ability to get lower to the ground and aiding in great court feeling and cushioning,” Klein says. “It’s resilient, responsive and disperses impact more evenly."
